Skilled Fitter - Assemblies
Job Description:

Morson Edge are currently looking for a skilled fitter to join our client’s aerospace manufacturing team in Burnley. Please see the details below:

MISSIONS

Fit and assemble parts or sub-assembled structures of nacelle components in accordance with instruction sheets, specifications, and standards. The role follows established processes using all required tools and equipment, while meeting cost objectives, HSE and Quality standards, and daily production schedules.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

  • Observe all Environmental, Health and Safety (HSE) rules.
  • Ensure the correct use and current validity of fixtures, tooling, and materials.
  • Handle sub-assembled nacelle components and position them on workstations/tooling.
  • Assemble parts and sub-assemblies in line with instruction sheets and inspect completed work.
  • Perform drilling, countersinking, riveting, fastening, and torqueing to design specifications.
  • Ensure shelf-life-controlled products (resin, PR, RTV, primer, etc.) have valid lot numbers and expiry dates, and record details on batch cards and/or one-shot documentation.
  • Report non-conformances related to assembly, drilling, countersinking, riveting, torqueing operations, and/or primary parts.
  • Complete batch cards to ensure full traceability of operations and validate work through self-inspection or delegated inspection.
  • Maintain the workstation, tools, and work area in accordance with current standards, including monitoring equipment expiry dates.
  • Identify and escalate any HSE concerns.
  • Comply with HSE requirements when using individual or shared equipment.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives (QRQC, waste minimisation, 5S, etc.).
  • Represent the company on customer sites during repair or retrofit operations when required.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge

  • Understanding of internal regulations, safety requirements, and working schedules.
  • General aeronautical knowledge.
  • Knowledge of environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures.
  • General knowledge of composite materials.
  • Familiarity with hand tooling (drilling machines, riveting machines, drill bushings, reamers, etc.).
  • Knowledge of fitting, assembling, fastening, and riveting techniques.
  • Understanding of hole positioning and shimming requirements.
  • Proficiency in measurement tools (Vernier calipers, plug gauges, callipers, etc.).
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation (instruction sheets, process sheets, rework instructions, drawings, master layouts).
  • Knowledge of applicable quality standards and basic quality principles.

Know-How

  • Review work planning and daily objectives (Flash 5 meetings).
  • Declare activity in SAP.
  • Select parts from Kanban or picking lists and complete required traceability records.
  • Position and fit parts on tooling.
  • Perform liquid and solid shimming operations.
  • Carry out drilling, spot facing, boring, and countersinking using appropriate equipment.
  • Deburr and finish edges as required.
  • Install and torque all types of fasteners.
  • Conduct geometrical inspections and complete associated documentation.
  • Verify fastener conformity (aero-smoothness, bulb shape, etc.).
  • Replace fasteners and install bushes.
  • Apply sealant in line with cosmetic standards.
  • Perform functional tests (with delegated inspection qualification where applicable).
  • Package products prior to shipment as required.
  • Identify defects and non-conformances.
  • Complete documentation accurately (batch cards).
  • Perform level-one preventative maintenance on equipment and ensure proper operation.
  • Maintain a clean and organised workstation in line with 5S principles.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Self-inspection qualification.
  • Time-served, recognised craft or technical apprenticeship (City & Guilds or ONC/HNC certificates).
