Overview of role:
WestJet is currently seeking a Principal Mobile Application Developer to support our Digital Technology team. Working with the Digital Mobile Software Development Team and reporting to the Sr. Manager, Mobile Application Delivery, this Specialist will help to lead the development of WestJet’s Guest facing mobile applications.
As a Principal Mobile Application Developer, responsibilities include the development and maintenance of code for the delivery of WestJets consumer facing mobile applications. This role will require application of industry-standard practices and techniques as well as active coaching of Developers in their use. Participation will be required in the ongoing improvement and evolution of WestJet’s software development practices and toolset while also providing technical support for WestJet’s mission-critical mobile applications. Specific duties will include design and development of code, build infrastructure maintenance, release management and ongoing support. Close collaboration between the development team, quality assurance and business stakeholders is required to develop software to meet WestJet’s business, technical and quality requirements. This position requires an energetic self-starter with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn and contribute to a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead/mentor others is essential.
Key deliverables include:
- Provide technical leadership to Software Developers in Digital and IT for the architecture, design, development and support of industry leading mobile applications
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of WestJets mobile app for iOS and Android platforms.
- Design and write robust, extensible, high-quality code that meets business, technical and quality requirements.
- Coordinate with Agile product and development teams on the planning, development and support of new and existing applications.
- Guide WestJets mobile development practice with a focus on security, performance, compliance and resilience.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement, learning and excellence to provide our guests exceptional experiences.
- Mentor and support junior developers, fostering a culture of growth and continuous learning.
- Provide technical direction, perform code reviews, and ensure adherence to coding standards.
- Work closely with teams across product management, backend services, and QA to ensure end-to-end system integrity.
- Implement measures to analyze the performance and accessibility of our applications. Provide data driven guidance for teams based on industry best practices, knowledge of our applications, guest feedback and analytics.
- Partner with analytics teams to track app performance and customer satisfaction metrics.
- Inform and mentor other software developers, product, QA, and appropriate stakeholders on industry trends and best practices to ensure WestJet is keeping current, and secure with its mobile technologies.
- Contribute to architectural decisions and develop frameworks for future app enhancements.
- Explore and implement innovations to improve app performance and customer engagement.
- Facilitate the investigation of incidents. Lead the troubleshooting, analysis, and mentorship/education of other team members to help resolve issues and deliver solutions
- Deliver prompt, efficient production technical support service for WestJet’s mobile apps.
- Provide timely support for critical incidents.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience building applications with Flutter/Dart is required.
- Expert level knowledge of Kotlin (Android) and/or Swift (iOS).
- Strong experience with mobile app architecture patterns (MVVM, MVC, etc.).
- Familiarity with RESTful APIs and integrating third-party SDKs.
- Experience with Azure and knowledge of CI/CD pipelines for mobile apps.
- Experience with mobile analytics platforms (e.g., Firebase, Adobe Analytics) and performance optimization tools.
- Knowledge of mobile platform guidelines (Material Design, Human Interface Guidelines)
- Ability to produce high quality mobile implementations from designs and wireframes.
- Experience with development for accessibility.
- 8+ years of experience in mobile app development, with at least 3 years in a senior/lead role.
- Proven track record of developing and managing high-traffic consumer-facing mobile applications.
- Exposure to the aviation or travel industry is a plus.
- Practical understanding of iterative, agile development methods, processes and techniques such as Scrum
- Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to convey technical ideas to non-technical stakeholders.
- Team-oriented mindset with a focus on collaboration and mentorship.
- Ability to work in a cross-functional DevOps environment
- Strong customer focus coupled with the ability to operate effectively in an energetic, fast-paced business environment
- Must provide high level of customer service to internal and external guests.
- Demonstrate sound judgment regarding confidential and sensitive matters.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
