Metrology Leader
Job Description:
The Metrology Leader is responsible for overseeing the development, programming, and operation of Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) while ensuring the highest standards of precision and quality control for aerospace components. This role includes leading the First Article Inspection (FAI) process to ensure that initial production runs meet all design specifications and quality standards. The position combines expertise in CMM programming, metrology, and FAI to ensure products are manufactured with the highest degree of accuracy and compliance. As a leader, the role requires managing a team of technicians and programmers, driving process improvements, and ensuring effective communication across teams.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Create, test, and refine CMM programs for complex aerospace parts, ensuring precision and optimal measurement efficiency.
  • Oversee the operation of CMM systems to perform accurate measurements, ensuring parts comply with engineering specifications and tolerances.
  • Proactively address any technical issues with CMM machines, sensors, or software to ensure minimal downtime and maximum operational efficiency.
  • Manage the First Article Inspection (FAI) process for new parts or production runs, ensuring that the first pieces produced meet all design specifications and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with quality, engineering, design, and production teams to review drawings, specifications, and material certifications for the first article.
  • Provide detailed FAI reports documenting measurement data, deviations, and corrective actions, ensuring full traceability and compliance with aerospace industry standards (e.g., AS9102).
  • Identify and communicate any non-conformance issues during the FAI process and monitor resolving the root causes to ensure that the parts meet required tolerances before full-scale production begins.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of metrology technicians and CMM programmers, ensuring that best practices in metrology are followed and that all measurements meet aerospace quality standards.
  • Provide ongoing training in CMM programming, metrology techniques, GD&T principles, and industry standards to ensure team proficiency and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure adherence to established metrology best practices, including GD&T interpretation, calibration procedures, and precise measurement protocols.
  • Ensure that CMM programs and measurement activities consistently deliver precise and accurate results, meeting aerospace tolerances and specifications.
  • Maintain thorough records of all measurement activities, FAI results, and any deviations or corrective actions, providing reports to engineering and management teams.
  • Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective actions when measurement issues are identified during the FAI or production process.
  • Identify and implement improvements in CMM programming and measurement workflows, reducing cycle times and improving overall measurement accuracy.
  • Work closely with quality, process and design engineering teams to provide feedback on part designs, manufacturability, and measurement processes, ensuring optimized part production.
  • Continuously evaluate and integrate new metrology tools, CMM technologies, and automation systems (e.g., 3D scanning or robotics) to improve measurement capabilities and efficiency.
  • Oversee the calibration, maintenance, and compliance of all CMM equipment and metrology tools to ensure accurate and reliable measurement results.
  • Utilize metrology software (e.g., PolyWorks, Calypso, PCDMIS) to develop, optimize, and manage CMM programs, analyze measurement data, and generate reports.
  • Ensure accurate data management, documentation, and traceability of all measurement results, meeting both regulatory requirements and customer expectations.
  • Ensure that all CMM programming, measurement activities, and FAI processes comply with aerospace industry standards such as AS9100, NADCAP, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Lead by example in maintaining a safe working environment by adhering to safety protocols and ensuring safe practices during all measurement and inspection activities

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing, Industrial or a related field.
  • Good level of English and proficient level of Spanish.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in CMM programming, metrology, and quality control, particularly in the aerospace manufacturing environment. Experience with First Article Inspection (FAI) is a must.
  • Proficiency with CMM systems (e.g., Zeiss, Hexagon, Mitutoyo, Renishaw) and advanced metrology software (e.g., PolyWorks, Calypso, PCDMIS), with a strong understanding of metrology principles and GD&T.
  • Proven experience leading technical teams, mentoring staff, and fostering a culture of quality and continuous improvement.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities to identify and resolve technical issues during CMM programming and the FAI process.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document and communicate measurement results, deviations, and corrective actions effectively.

Desired Characteristics

  • Familiarity with cutting-edge metrology technologies, such as 3D laser scanning, robotic measurement systems, and optical measurement tools.
  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks) to interpret 3D models and optimize CMM programming.
  • Experience using SPC to monitor and improve measurement consistency and quality control.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex quality issues to senior management and external auditors.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities, with the ability to train and develop metrology and CMM programmer staff.
  • Analytical thinking with a focus on data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.
