Job overview and responsibilities

The Manager of Pilot Award Optimization leads the strategic planning and team production processes involved with the monthly pilot schedule award cycle. The monthly award translates thousands of individual pilot bid preferences into a legal, staffed monthly flying schedule for each pilot. This manager is responsible for leading the team that creates these monthly awards, as well as delivering optimal reserve award coverage across each pilot category, delivering new technology capabilities to enhance our optimization software, and partnering with key stakeholders across United to ensure that a successful award is produced for our pilot population each month.

The manager serves as an integral stakeholder across the Crew Planning production cycle, with the collective goal of producing a strong schedule for our Crew Scheduling colleagues. Through partnership with Workforce Planning, Flight Training Scheduling, Fatigue Management, Digital Technology, and pilot union leadership, this role navigates delivering schedule needs from our pilots alongside contractual and plan requirements to support a strong operation. The manager will also be focused on the continued growth and development of the five planners who create monthly awards.

The manager works closely with Digital Technology and our technology providers to enhance and evolve our optimization tools, shaping the future of pilot awarding. He/she will also work to build our next generation of reporting, presentations, and data analysis capabilities to enable continuous improvement of our planning and awarding.

• Lead the team through the monthly plan production cycle related to trip awards, ensuring close coordination, accuracy and contractual adherence to achieve the plan’s expectations
• Work cross-functionally throughout United (e.g., Workforce Planning, Training Scheduling, Fatigue Management, Digital Technology, union leadership) to ensure viability and efficiency of pilot awards
• Manage and coach a team of planners to support their growth, development, and technological capabilities in the crew award optimization space.
• Develop the group’s capabilities of data management, visualizations, and learnings from each successive pilot award schedule to enhance our future plans, including crew preference learnings, measuring success of each category’s monthly awards, and analyzing monthly reserve coverage for the operation.
• Strategically identify product and process improvement opportunities, generate new ideas for product development, and evaluate and support new technology implementation
