Job Summary
The Assembly Mechanic plays a critical role in assembling, installing, sealing, rigging, and inspecting precision and structural system components according to detailed specifications. The role involves working from drawings, documents, process specifications, and quality control standards to ensure that all components are fabricated and assembled to meet the required form, fit, and function. The Assembly Mechanic is also responsible for maintaining equipment, supporting continuous workflow, and contributing to the training and development of other assembly personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Information Gathering
- Obtain the necessary information from prints, charts, sketches, work instructions, and verbal/electronic sources to carry out tasks effectively.
Precision Measurement & Testing
- Utilize shop mathematics and precision measuring instruments to complete work assignments.
- Perform functional tests on assemblies and components to ensure accuracy and compliance with specifications.
Assembly & Sub-Assembly
- Use tooling to assemble components into sub-assemblies or complete end items.
- Ensure all assembly work meets engineering specifications and quality standards.
Verification & Discrepancy Identification
- Verify that work is performed according to work instructions and meets process or engineering specifications.
- Identify and report discrepancies in the assembly process as per applicable procedures.
Tool & Equipment Certification
- Ensure tools and equipment are certified and meet operational requirements as per established procedures.
Routine Maintenance
- Perform basic machine maintenance duties, including replacing machine filters, changing light bulbs, and maintaining lubrication/coolant levels as part of Total Preventative Maintenance duties.
Product Movement
- Routinely move products within the manufacturing work area, including across aisles, using shop-assigned equipment as required.
- Complete necessary transactions to ensure the product is moved to the next operation or department as needed.
Meeting Deadlines
- Perform all tasks and responsibilities within allotted schedules to maintain smooth operations.
Training & Support
- Support continuous flow within the manufacturing process by assisting and training employees at all levels.
- Help with the development and training of new assembly personnel in installation, inspection, and assembly techniques.
Cross-Training & SIA Qualification
- Cross-train in inspection roles and become SIA qualified to ensure versatility and the ability to perform in all general functions of the Assembly Mechanic.
Candidate Requirements/Must Have Skills
Technical Skills
- Ability to work from detailed prints, sketches, and documents.
- Proficient in using precision measuring instruments and shop mathematics.
Experience
- Demonstrated experience in assembly, installation, and inspection within a manufacturing or mechanical environment.
- Familiarity with assembly tooling and processes.
Education & Certification
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Certifications: Completion of assembly or mechanical certification programs is a plus.
- Additional Requirements: Ability to cross-train in inspection and achieve SIA qualifications.
