Software Engineer – Analytics
Job Description:
Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and preparing to launch commercial service in 2025.

Working as a Software Engineer in the Data Analytics core team you will be responsible for developing and improving software architectures of prototype analytics tools into production and promoting Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI / CD) principles within the team. You should be able to work cohesively with subject matter experts and distill requirements into simple, testable and maintainable software. You will also need to work closely with your analytics colleagues across a broad set of highly technical disciplines who depend on data to architect and optimize analytics solutions, helping them transform one-off analyses into production-quality software. The ideal candidate is energetic, has a positive attitude, is flexible and excited about learning and using new technologies

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with data scientists, other cross-functional teams and subject matter experts on software engineering projects
  • Provide guidance to improve performance and operability of the solutions the Data Analytics team develops
  • Builds deployment for analytical applications and data pipelines on various platforms (Databricks, Kubernetes, local machines)
  • Promote SW Engineering and DevOps principles and culture across the Data Analytics team
  • Comfortable navigating a quickly changing environment and willing to learn on-the-fly to obtain and define requirements
  • Stay current with advancements in software and data engineering
Required
  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or similar field and 3+ years of relevant work experience
  • Expert-level software-engineering ability: you are able to distill requirements into simple, testable and maintainable software, provide technical guidance and design solutions for large-scale data science and automation projects
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex issues across multiple levels of abstraction
  • Strong programming skills in a high level language, in particular with Python
  • Experience with SQL databases and the relational data model
  • Experience developing on Unix-based platforms
  • Experience with version control and CI/CD platforms. Youre able to see your software through its entire lifecycle (development, testing, deployment)
  • Self-starter capable of working with limited supervision and guidance
  • Experience leading projects from conception to completion
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
Desired
  • Experience with the Python data stack (Pandas, Scipy/Numpy, Jupyter)
  • Experience with distributed systems and big data tools (i.e., Kafka, Apackage Spark, Flink, Presto)
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation, Kubernetes manifests, ...)
  • Experience with MLOps and building machine learning pipelines in a professional setting

Please still apply if you don’t meet all items in the desired section! Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. We are dedicated to building a diverse and effective workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
