Reporting to the Director Heavy Maintenance & Powerplant, the Senior Powerplant Engineer is responsible for the engineering management as related to the WestJet Aircraft Engine Program which includes configuration management, maintenance forecasting, cost forecasting/management, off-wing ownership control and liaising with Engine OEM/Repair vendors.
Key deliverables and responsibilities:
- Act as the engineering escalation contact for powerplant portfolio and provide engineering, technical, and operational support across all WestJet operational and maintenance functions.
- Review powerplant Airworthiness Directives, Service Bulletins, Service Letters, and other published regulatory and OEM documents, recommend compliance based on technical evaluation and cost justification, and create engineering controls and task cards in Computerized Maintenance Tracking System (CMTS) as required.
- Mentor team members to ensure CMTS setup and tracking is properly configured.
- Maintain Engineering Build Specification(s) for assigned products, involves creating, updating, controlling the version of, and communicating the technical documentation that details the requirements and procedures for engine platform on-wing and off-wing maintenance.
- Minimize the engine technical, reliability, and operational risks and disruptions, and ensure asset availability using fleet reliability data, engine/APU shop visit findings and engine performance and health monitoring tools to identify adverse trends (cost/reliability drivers).
- Engage in engine performance and health monitoring and analysis.
- Develop and manage engine and APU life cycle, taking into account cost of ownership, lease terms, operational life, budget forecast, spares availability and technical/financial risk mitigation strategies
- Engage in engine repair and shop visit management, removal plan development, work scope definition, and technical management and commercial/cost oversight of all Engine Shop visits.
- Lead Engine MRO Quarterly Business Reviews. Participate in OEM technical support conferences and meetings (WTT calls, annual technical conferences, and fleet management calls).
- Liaise with OEM, provide engine change notifications, coordinate off wing repair activities and provide support/coordination on wing repair and maintenance activities.
- Take on special projects such as supporting Strategic Procurement’s request for proposal process and performance analysis.
- Support Treasury and Fleet Transition Team on Aircraft Lease Return/Extension activities. Develop, "What if" scenarios and provide cost with regards to extending or returning particular leased aircraft.
- Maintain workscope and cost template forecasting tools (EFPAC, Excel, SharePoint file).
Experience and qualifications:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Aircraft Maintenance, Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
- A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience with large commercial aircraft engines and the commercial airline regulatory environment
- Technical knowledge of engineering/propulsion programs, specifically with CFM56, LEAP, PW150, and/or GEnx preferred
- Sound knowledge of TRAX/eMRO preferred or other similar computerized maintenance tracking systems required
- Excellent ability to read and understand technical manuals and documents
- Computer software skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- Ability to communicate effectively and liaise with OEMs, front line Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, and non-technical personnel
- Basic knowledge and understanding of budgeting and forecasting
