Our name, Avionics-Upgrades describes what we do.  Our focus is on avionics retrofits in general aviation single and twin, piston and turbine aircraft. We install primarily Garmin equipment and we are a Garmin gold-level sales award recipient. Our business is growing and we are expanding to accommodate our steady backlog of work.  Don’t be concerned by our lack of internet presence.

Candidate will be expected to perform installations, troubleshooting, and repairs of aircraft avionics systems and components on a variety of airframes in a timely, clean, safe, and professional manner with no rework, and with a superior level of quality, craftsmanship, and efficiency.

  • The ideal candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of avionics installations in single/twin-engine piston/turbine General Aviation aircraft.

A typical project at our facility would include the following phases. The candidate would be required to contribute to this process.

The Avionics Upgrade Process – An outline of what we do:

  • Consult with customer to plan an avionics solution that meets their needs.
  • Consult with customers during a project to keep them informed of ongoing issues and ensure the finished project meets their needs.
  • Utilize available data to plan out the equipment removal, integration with existing components, and installation of avionics in the aircraft.
  • Utilize manufacturers' manuals and other data to produce wiring diagrams using AutoCAD. 
  • Interpret wiring diagrams to fabricate wiring harnesses.
  • Disassemble aircraft and remove equipment and wiring as required for the project.
  • Install avionics components and wiring into the aircraft.
  • Design instrument panel if needed.
  • Cut the instrument panel from sheet aluminum using a Panel Pro CNC router.
  • Prep instrument panel to include drilling, counter sinking, thread tapping, and riveting operations.
  • Powder coat instrument panel and other metal parts using in-house equipment.
  • Produce instrument panel placards using the Panel Pro CNC engraving accessory.
  • Install instrument panel and avionics components into aircraft ensuring a high level of fit and aesthetics.
  • Perform avionics programming, setup, and calibration.
  • Perform 91.411 & 91.413 certifications using pitot/static and transponder test equipment.
  • Track and document all work performed using company procedures.
  • Document details of all removed and installed equipment for weight and balance computation. Weigh aircraft and calculate weight & balance data.
  • Prepare the required document package including Form 337, flight manual supplements, instructions for continued airworthiness, logbook entry, wiring diagrams, etc.
Job Requirements:

Not all knowledge and skills mentioned here are required, but pay will be based on what the candidate brings to the table. Pay can increase over time as knowledge and skills are obtained. The employer will provide OJT training to help increase the employee’s skills and knowledge.

We perform all phases of the avionics upgrade process in-house.  Employees are encouraged to learn all aspects of the operation and to collaborate & cross-train with other team members. Any potential members should consider the following.

General Qualifications:  

  • Must be able to pass FAA/DOT drug and alcohol pre-employment and random screening. Our company has a zero-tolerance policy.
  • Removes and installs avionics equipment and electrical components, fabricates wire harnesses and terminations, troubleshoots installations, and completes functional testing of avionics and electrical systems.
  • Works on a variety of aircraft from the smallest single piston to twin-turbine aircraft, including an occasional helicopter or experimental aircraft.
  • Work in potentially uncomfortable positions and/or confined spaces.
  • Key consideration will be given to a candidate who can act as lead/supervisor on assigned aircraft projects, potentially overseeing other team members.

PREFERRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Avionics installation experience with piston/turbine single/twin aircraft.
  • Aircraft Electronics Technician (AET) certification, Airframe & Power plant Certificate, and FCC GROL are all desirable.
  • Wire harness fabrication including connector build-up and wire terminations.
  • Understanding of avionics components and system integration.
  • Product knowledge and installation experience with Garmin and other manufacturers, including; EFIS displays, WAAS GPS navigators, VHF com/nav, autopilot, airborne weather RADAR, RS-232, ARINC 429, CAN bus, HSDB, etc.
  • Experience with Engine Information Systems (EIS) and engine monitor systems from
    J P Instruments, Garmin, Dynon, and Electronic International.
  • Knowledge of legacy avionics such as Bendix/King, autopilots, etc. is also desirable
  • AutoCAD and Panel Pro experience is a plus
  • Metal fabrication techniques as they apply to avionics installation. (Sheet metal foot shear, sheet metal brake, riveting, corrosion mitigation, etc.)
  • Pilot license is a plus.
  • FOD Foreign Object Damage.
  • ESD Electrostatic Sensitive Devices
  • Human factors.
  • Knowledge and understanding of FARs 43, 91, 135, 145 et. al.
